“Premier League is the best league in the world “
“Premier League is where the strongest teams compete”
“Premier League offers the most entertaining football”
“La Liga is a two-horse race”
“La Liga is nothing interesting when you cut FC Barcelona and Real Madrid off”
You must have heard one these quotes when starting to watch football and you still do for sure. Just like me, you must have believed every single one them. Unlike you, I do not anymore. Just like what my bio says, I’ll be speaking out your deepest football thoughts as you and I both know that somewhere deep inside of you, you ARE convinced that La Liga IS the best league in the world.
I am a very methodical person, I believe in facts, I believe in stats. Over the past 10 years, La Liga has been crushing the Premier League. Oooh! Was that too harsh for you to take? Take a deep breath, I am only getting warmed up!
Let us start with the most basic stat: direct confrontations. English and Spanish clubs have faced each other 42 times over the past 10 seasons (from 2009-10 to 2019-20).
Spanish sides won 24 times over those 42 games, which happens to represent 57% of the games while the English teams only managed to win some very poor 15 games, 36% of them. They drew 3 times, 7%. FACTS.
Have I spoken about the amount of goals scored during these games? I believe I have not so here I go: Mighty Premier League teams scored 97 goals while poor Spanish teams only managed to score 108 of them. That is a small 11-0 goal difference for La Liga. FACTS.
Let us move to my favorite part, the one filled with the most testosterone: European Titles.
Over the last 10 editions of both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, Premier League teams won a huge amount of 3 out of 20 titles while poor Spanish sides only managed to win 12 of them.
Oh, and by the way, 4 different Spanish teams (Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atletico de Madrid and FC Sevilla) won those titles versus 3 (Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea) for England. FACTS.
Now comes the part where I will be refuting one of the biggest myths in football history: ‘’La Liga is a two-horse race’’.
When has a league ever been just about who wins it? That is just the topping of the cake, a cake which is filled with battles for European spots and avoiding relegation.
You should be wise enough to never judge a book by it’s cover. I am awfully sorry to disappoint you by telling you that it is exactly what you have done when you judged La Liga and said that the Premier League is more competitive.
Here is the cover: 3 teams have managed to win La Liga over the last 10 seasons (FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico de Madrid) while 5 five English sides (Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Leicester City and Liverpool in a couple of weeks) managed to win the Premier League. Happy? Well you should not be. Here is why: the number of ‘’Top 6’’ teams in the Premier League during these last 10 years is 9 (Chelsea, City, United, Spurs, Arsenal, Leicester, Southamptonm Everton and Newcastle) versus 13 (Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atletico de Madrid, Valencia CF, FC Sevilla, Getafe, Betis de Sevilla, Villareal, Celta Vigo, Athletic Bilbao, Malaga, Levante and Mallorca) in the Spanish league. FACTS.
All these stats got to show you how mistaken you are and how controlled by the media you are. If La Liga were to invest in marketing as much as the Premier League, be sure that there will be no more Premier League fans in Asia.
La Liga is where the most beautiful football is displayed, La Liga is where the most goals are scored, La Liga is football’s NBA.
